Driving down the street and you have a blow out… would it have made a difference knowing a little Tires 101 info? Maybe. As we all know, tires don’t usually last forever. Checking for wear and tear is a huge part of making sure that your tires are in good shape. You can do what is called as a “Penny test” where you check the tread depth by seeing where the tread hits on Lincoln. You can check the tire treads across the tire, put Lincoln’s head down into the grooves, and if it covers Lincolns head then there’s about 2/32 inch of the tread still available, then if you want to use a quarter and part of Washington’s head is covered then you probably have about 4/32 inch of tread depth remaining, and another trick is to go back to the penny and if the top of the Lincoln Memorial is covered then you have about 6/32 inch left of the tread remaining.
Having less tread on the tires means that in rain and snow your traction and ability to slow down are lessened, and just driving around town or freeways you are more likely to have issues with having a blow out. By having a low tire tread you are also putting your safety at risk.
